This historic structures report (HSR) focuses on the Josiah Benner Farmhouse and Springhouse located within Gettysburg National Military Park. The purpose of this report is to fully document the buildings and their original appearance and evolution. Additionally, this HSR helps to achieve several service-wide goals: to provide baseline research for the Benner Farm, which is needed to support appropriate stabilization and repairs; to inform and support future treatment and management decisions through documentary evidence and research; to address a threatened resource which has been subject to deferred maintenance and progressive deterioration; and to address a nationally significant resource, which is designated as a contributing resources within a National Register Historic District. Of specific interest is the original configuration of the springhouse, as well as the configuration of the farmhouse and its respective outbuildings during the period of significance for Gettysburg National Military Park (1863-1938). This report is written in accordance with NPS Director’s Order #28: Cultural Resource Management Guideline and will include the following sections: Historical Background and Context, Chronology of Development and Use, Current Physical Description, Conclusions (Character- Defining Features and General Recommendations), measured drawings of the farmhouse and springhouse, and results from the materials analysis.
