The report recommends that the NPS attempt to improve the consistency of its records of NPS work accomplished at the Stedman Buttrick House, so that its future history can be better documented than its past. Although the NPS provided many records of several projects, it transpired that almost all of them were related to the planning and/or initial design of projects. There was little photo documentation of work in progress and no older drawings that could be unequivocally identified as reliable as-built documents. Similarly, there appears to be no systematic recording of storage locations and dates for items that have probably been removed from the house by the NPS, for instance, shutters, light fixtures and one or two doors, nor dates and scope of periodic maintenance. As for information from the Buttrick period, there appears to be no photo-documentation of the interior after the articles published in the contemporary architectural press, as well as nothing that shows how the house was used by the family. The report suggests that it might still be possible to work with surviving family members to reduce this gap, just as small changes in reporting policies could capture good data for future updates to the history of the Stedman Buttrick House.
