This report was produced by the Building Conservation Branch (BCB) of the National Park Service's Northeast Cultural Resources Center. The purpose of this report is to document the construction history of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park Visitor Center. This report fulfills the NPS-28 Cultural Resource Management Guideline requirements for the documentation of historic structures prior to treatment of such structures. This report documents the evolution of the building using primary and secondary sources including public and private records, historic photographs, historic maps, and an investigation of the existing architectural fabric. Since the creation of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park in 1996, the building has served as the Park Visitor Center and the offices of WHALE. Negotiations are currently taking place for the transfer of ownership of the building to the National Park Service. An extensive stabilization/rehabilitation of the building is also being planned for the near future. "Treatment Recommendations" in this report are limited to the Building Conditions Assessment and the Paint Analysis sections of this report.
