Fort Wadsworth Activation Study

On June 30, 1980, the remainder of Fort Wadsworth will be transferred to the National Park Service. An interim plan is being developed which can help provide guidance for the management and operation of Fort Wadsworth for at least one to three years. The plan will identify immediate management needs, including staffing requirements and emergency maintenance repairs. Other management costs such as fuel consumption will also be estimated for this start-up period. The success of the Park Service's mission at Fort Wadsworth hinges on the park's ability to establish and effectively manage public non-profit use of more than two hundred thousand square feet of building space at Fort Wadsworth. This interim plan will discuss criteria for the selection of permittees and guidelines for permit management. The plan will not, however, attempt to provide a detailed program for the use of individual buildings (beyond the recommended use of a few structures for park operational functions). The intent of this interim planning is to provide basic information and direction which will enable park management working with the public to determine appropriate uses for the resources of Fort Wadsworth. This plan will build on the policies and proposals already approved in the Final General Management Plan.
