Acquired by the National Park Service in 2002, the Murphy Farm consists of 97.95 acres of rolling agricultural fields and deciduous woods overlooking the Bulls Falls rapids of the Shenandoah River. Three of the primary features include a house, Civil War earthworks and the John Brown Fort foundation. Due to the property’s significance on a local and national level within the contexts of agriculture, the Civil War, social history, ethnic heritage, and archeological resources, it is currently in the nomination process for inclusion into the National Register of Historic Places. The phase I survey that is the subject of this report was conducted in order to systematically and scientifically research, locate, evaluate and record archeological and cultural resources within the boundaries of the Murphy Farm. Results of this survey and inventory will be used to recommend further archeological and research projects along with informing management decisions pertaining to the future use of the property.
