This publication presents conceptual site design alternatives for Miller Field, Staten Island Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. With multiple points of entry and a multitude of conflicting traffic patterns, there is a need to improve vehicular and pedestrian access to the site in addition to circulation and recreational use throughout the site. Realizing the high demand for recreation facilities at this site, suggestions were made adjusting field layouts to accommodate a new circulation system as well as maintenance and operational needs. This project is done in anticipation of the impending FHLP construction funding. Miller Field, consists of 187.2 acres on Staten Island's southern shore in New York harbor. It's history stretches back over 300 years to the time of the Dutch occupation of New York. The property has passed through various hands over the years. Since 1975, The National Park Service has been managing the site for recreation uses, principally softball, baseball, football and soccer. Currently, the National Park Service is looking at increasing interpretive opportunities for the field, however increases in athletic uses require taking a fresh look at the recreation facilities of the whole site.
