The subject of this documentation is the remains of a seacoast gun battery located at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York, a former U.S. Army installation under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Navy. Fort Wadsworth is situated on the southeast side of Staten Island, at the south end of Bay Avenue. The western anchorage and Interstate-287 approach of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge are located on the installation, creating a a visual, although not physical, boundary between the northern and southern areas of the post. Battery Duane is situation on the side side of Tompkins Avenue, which extends east from New York Avenue just north of the Verrazzano Bridge. On the opposite side of Tompkins Avenue is the southern scarp of Fort Tompkins. Battery Duane is oriented to face south, toward New York Bay.
