A great diversity of birds live on Carlsbad Caverns National Park; 368 species have been documented. The park is located in the northern portion of the Chihuahuan Desert, the most biologically diverse desert in the Western Hemisphere. While Carlsbad Caverns National Park contains one of the largest, deepest, and most ornate caves in North America, beauty and wonder exist both above and below ground. Birds are an important part of the above ground ecosystem at Carlsbad, although at least one species, the Cave Swallow, nests in the park's iconic caves. The large number of bird species on the park include year-round residents, neotropical migrants that nest in the park or pass through on the way to northern breeding grounds, winter residents, and occasional or accidental species that wander in and may stay awhile. Carlsbird Caverns is one of the best national parks in the country for birding.
