In May 2014, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) created and began completing annual spring breeding surveys for rock (Lagopus muta) and willow ptarmigan (L.lagopus) within Denali National Park (DNP). A willow ptarmigan survey route was created along a portion of the DNP park road just west of the Savage River gate and a rock ptarmigan survey route just west of Mount Margaret near Primrose Ridge.
