The scope of work of this current report is to update the existing May 1981 Historic Structures Report (HSR) for Hangars 3 and 4 at Floyd Bennett Field. This report serves as an addendum to the 1981 report. The HSR addendum will use the 1981 terminology and when possible the report’s format. Hangars 3 and 4 are two of a series of eight hangars built in the early 1930’s as part of New York City’s first municipal airport. Located along Flatbush Avenue in southeast Brooklyn, Floyd Bennett Field is now part of the 1100 acre Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreational Area, administered by the National Park Service (NPS). The hangars are located directly south of the Ryan Visitor Center (formerly the airport administration building). As part of the airport, the hangars were an important component of the early airfield. Their historic significance was acknowledged in 1980 when the entire airfield was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Floyd Bennett Field Historic District consists of approximately 383.3 acres. Today the hangars have, to a large extent, maintained their integrity since construction. Their exterior facades have changed very little; and the area around the hangars and the main interior spaces remain largely intact.
