In the fall of 1993, the Division of Archeology at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park conducted excavations on the site of Lewis Wernwag's sawmill (46JF229). It is located on the eastern end of Virginius Island, just north of the existing ruins of the Cotton/Flour Mill on the banks of the Shenandoah River. Excavations began September 15, 1993 and ended December 8, 1993. As one component of construction Package 320 on Virginius Island in the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, the Archeology Division worked in conjunction with the cultural landscape architects and the historians in an effort to locate foundations and other landscape features associated with nineteenth-century buildings including the sawmill The goal of this combined effort is the development of better understanding of the changing social and physical environment on the island in the nineteenth century. The information presented in this research will be used to improve park interpretation of the islands history and to guide the stabilization of extant cultural resources (Joseph, Wheelock, and Warshaw 1993:1.3).
