Gateway National Recreation Area wishes to document the history, development and condition of the NY‐56 NIKE Missile site, composed of two separate areas (Missile Launch and Radar Tracking) located south of Fort Hancock on the Sandy Hook peninsula in New Jersey. The site is intimately associated with the Cold War of the second half of the 20th Century and the system of national defense put in place by the United States during this time. Today it exists in a partially restored and maintained state. A portion of the Missile Launch Area provides storage, office and work space for Park Service maintenance staff and volunteers. A portion of the Radar Tracking Area has been restored and is open to the general public at specific times. As a basis for planning upcoming projects, the National Park Service commissioned the preparation of this Historic Structure Report by John Milner Architects, Inc. with subconsultants Keast & Hood Structural Engineers, Inc. and Bruce E. Brooks & Associates. The scope of work for this project is to document the evolution of the site through archival research and physical investigations, culminating in the preparation of Part 1‐ Developmental History as defined in Director’s Order – 28, Chapter 8. The report will identify and document the original appearance, integrity, and historic evolution of the building; identify the appearance of the site from its construction in 1954 through its decommissioning and transfer to the Park Service in 1974. The extant architectural materials, site elements and character‐defining features from this period will also be recorded. In accordance with NPS directives for this project, this study focuses on both the northern Radar Tracking Area and southern Missile Launch Area. Fort Hancock and the Sandy Hook peninsula are only discussed as they relate to the context of the NIKE site and its operation. Structures wholly constructed and significant structures and site elements modified after the transfer to the Park Service in 1974 are documented as existing conditions though not dating from the period of significance.
