Mosquitoes are seasonally abundant in Big Cypress National Preserve and have more contact with visitors and park staff than any other form of wildlife. Mosquitoes also have the capacity to transmit microbial pathogens that can affect both human and animal health. A total of 192,440 mosquitoes were trapped during June-August 2014 and assayed for the presence of arboviruses. A total of 15 isolates were obtained which included three species: Tensaw virus, Everglades virus and Shark River virus.
