Historic Structure Report for Appomattox Plantation Outbuildings

The Historic Structure Report (HSR) is for the Appomattox Plantation Outbuildings at the Grant’s Headquarters unit of Petersburg National Battlefield. This HSR documents the development, use, and current condition of two smokehouses, one dairy, and one kitchen-laundry and examines options for uses and treatments of these outbuildings to inform and guide stewardship of these historic structures by the NPS. The HSR is divided into two major segments, Part I: Developmental History, and Part II: Treatment and Use. Part I is a scholarly report of several chapters documenting the historical background and context; providing a chronology of the evolution of the buildings; presenting a detailed physical description of the exterior and interior of each building and assessing current conditions; and describing the significance and integrity of the outbuildings. It is based on the combined analysis of documentary research and physical examination. Part II: Treatment and Use contains chapters that review the requirements for treatment and use; present the NPS administratively determined ultimate treatment and use; and offer recommendations to achieve the ultimate treatment and use, coupled with recommendations for further enhancement. Appomattox Plantation was listed on the National Register for Historic Places in 1979 with its 20th century name of Appomattox Manor.
