On March 28-30, 1979 Donald Cumberland traveled to Sandy Hook Unit, Gateway National Recreational Area to assist the park staff in determining appropriate museum storage supplies and equipment; and arranging space requirements for creating a museum storage facility within Building No. 28. The Sandy Hook Unit is administratively concentrated at Ft. Hancock at the tip of the Sandy Hook peninsula. Ft. Hancock is a recently deactivated Army testing and defense facility guarding the approaches of New York Harbor. It consists of a complex of buildings germane to the military role and now, once deactivated, has unlimited potential for a multitude of housing uses. Museum storage will be one of the more important uses.
