The Mulchatna Archeology Survey investigated a portion of the Mulchatna River valley between the Bonanza Hills and Koktuli River mouth, where little previous work had occurred. Field surveys and limited excavations between 2000 and 2007 were organized around the search for so-called “Mulchatna Villages,” 19th century Dena’ina Athabascan settlements reported in historic and oral accounts. This report provides extensive environmental and historic context, survey descriptions and results, and includes detailed discussions of population and demographics, house features, and site dating. Additionally, descriptions and analysis of materials from house excavations at site XLC-00108 are detailed in a separate chapter. Maps, genealogies, and a collection of historic photographs are provided in appendices.
