Very few of the potential nesting sites in Wisconsin for the Federally Endangered Piping Plover(Charadrius melodus) have been monitored on a regular basis. The five designated Critical Habitats for Piping Plovers in WI, however, are regularly surveyed. In the recent years leading up to 2006, a maximum of only one pair has been found nesting on Wisconsin’s Lake Superior shore (Sumner Matteson, pers. comm.). In addition, two other Endangered, Threatened, or Special Concern beach-obligate invertebrate species may occur in similar habitats, the State Endangered Lake Huron Locust, and the state Special Concern Beach-Dune Tiger Beetle (Trimerotropis huroniana and Cicindela hirticollis rhodensis). These surveys focused primarily on plover surveys and habitat evaluation, and gathered information on the latter two sensitive species when time and circumstance allowed. Surveys were limited to Lake Superior.
