Inventory Unit Description: The Conata Picnic Area is a Mission 66 Era designed historic landscape in Badlands National Park. Located adjacent to designated wilderness the site is approximately .5 miles south of the Conata Road/Badlands Loop Road intersection. The landscape was part of the 1957 master plan to develop the park for visitor use and was documented as complete in a 1965 report. The features of the landscape are organized around the base of a Badlands landform and include a road, pull off or bump out parking areas with bollards, six custom designed canopy picnic shelters mounted on concrete platforms, a interpretation table, and restroom facilities.
