Snow is nutrient-limited yet snow microbial ecosystems contribute to global processes, including hydrology, climate, and carbon cycling. These observations underscore key outstanding questions that preclude the inclusion of snow microbiota in global models: 1) how do snow algae and snow microbiota acquire nutrients; 2) do snow microbiome abundance and activity scale with allochthonous input? and 3) what is the long-term relationship between snow algae abundance and glacier mass balance?
