Snow and alpine streams are nutrient-limited yet these microbial ecosystems contribute to global processes, including hydrology, climate, and carbon cycling. These observations underscore key outstanding questions that preclude the inclusion of alpine microbiota in global models: 1) how do cold-adapted microbes acquire nutrients; 2) do cold-adapted microbe abundance and activity scale with allochthonous input?
