Comprehensive Thrasher Surveys in the California Mojave Desert

Tietz JR, Geupel GR, Jonsomjit D, McCreedy C. Comprehensive Thrasher Surveys in the California Mojave Desert. Research Permit and Reporting System

Bendire’s Thrasher (BETH, Toxostoma bendirei) and LeConte’s Thrasher (LCTH, Toxostoma lecontei) are among the fastest declining bird species of arid lands. We surveyed 176 plots at 27 different sites in the Mojave Desert. During surveys, we detected 20 adult BETH on 12 plots of 5 sites and 10 adult LCTH on seven plots of six sites. In 2021, all BETH detections were on the Mojave National Preserve, while the LCTH were more widespread.
