The LBJ Boyhood Home Area, one of two component landscapes that make up the Johnson City Unit of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, commemorates the early life of the 36th President. At approximately 15 acres in size, the LBJ Boyhood Home Area includes the Lyndon B. Johnson Boyhood Home (HB-1), associated outbuildings, and grounds that document and interpret the development of Lyndon B. Johnson from childhood through his emergence as a young man. Here the future president went to school and grew to maturity before leaving for Washington and launching a political career. The period of significance for the LBJ Boyhood Home Area extends from 1913 through 1973. This sixty-year period of significance includes the year when the Johnsons moved from the family ranch at Stonewall into the LBJ Boyhood Home (HB-1) in Johnson City, through the death of Lyndon B. Johnson in 1973. The LBJ Boyhood Home Area has a direct association with the life of the President. Lyndon B. Johnson who lived at the LBJ Boyhood Home (HB-1) from 1913 through 1920 and from 1922 through 1927. While living in the LBJ Boyhood Home (HB-1), Lyndon Johnson attended grammar school and high school, went off to college, and began his political career. Though not associated directly with the presidential years, the resources in the LBJ Boyhood Home Area are associated with Johnson’s formative years – years that saw a number of important developments take place in the life of the future president. The LBJ Boyhood Home Area is significant under Criteria A, B, C, and D of the National Register of Historic Places. Criteria Considerations E and G also apply. The Boyhood Home Area is significant in the areas of Politics/Government, Architecture, Community Planning and Development, and Social History.
