The Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network (GLKN) developed this protocol to track basic limnological parameters and changing water quality over time at six national parks in the western Great Lakes. Water quality for inland lakes was ranked during strategic planning among the most fundamental ecological indicators for GLKN to monitor. The core suite of parameters includes pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, temperature, lake level, and water clarity. The advanced suite of parameters includes nitrogen and phosphorous species, dissolved organic carbon, major ions, dissolved silica, and chlorophyll-a. This protocol describes each park’s water resources, summarizes historical knowledge of water quality studies, explains sampling design and methods, and outlines steps for data handling, analysis, and reporting. Standard operating procedures give details on how each process is accomplished. The overall goal is to develop a program for monitoring water quality on inland lakes that will contribute to an understanding of the health of aquatic ecosystems and provide insights on likely water resources issues within each park.
