This Historic Structure Report (HSR) documents the existing fabric and condition of the Meyer Building within the Skagway and White Pass National Historic Landmark (NHL) in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park (KLGO). Constructed in 1899 for use as a meat market, the Meyer Building also housed a shoe store and a telephone company. In the middle 1920s, circa 1924-1927, the Museum of '98 may have been located in the Meyer Building. Following the museum, the building served as a garage and then used for storage. Located just outside of the Skagway Historic District on the southwest corner of Fifth Avenue and State Street, (Block 8, Lot 1), the National Historic Landmark nomination form includes the Herman Meyer Building as a contributing resource to the Skagway and White Pass District National Historic Landmark. (Figure 2) Since the park's creation in 1976, the NPS has renovated more than 17 historic structures in Skagway. The acquisition of the Meyer Building in 2008 from the Rasmuson Foundation, reaffirms the National Park Service's commitment to the preservation and management of the historic properties, thus fulfilling agency policies and legal mandates to preserve resources and provide public access. Condition assessments, architectural data, and historical documentation have been prepared since the NPS acquired the building.
