Critical loads, and critical load exceedances, of N and S deposition for herbaceous species within parks based on NPSpecies data

Russell NA, Bell MD, Felker-Quinn E. 2022. Critical loads, and critical load exceedances, of N and S deposition for herbaceous species within parks based on NPSpecies data

This file includes the accompanying dataset developed for the Natural Resource Report "Assessing exceedances of critical loads of nitrogen and critical loads of sulfur for herbaceous plant species in national parks". This dataset was created using a set of critical loads of nitrogen (N) and critical loads of sulfur (S) developed by Clark et al. (2019) for 348 herbaceous species. Clark et al. developed these critical loads with species response equations that incorporated the environmental conditions (soil pH, precipitation, temperature) experienced by species. This dataset was cross-referenced with species lists for each park from the NPSpecies database. Average critical loads from the Clark et al. analysis were applied to each species that occurred in a park. 3-year average N and S deposition data from 2016 - 2018 were taken from the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) Total Deposition model (TDep) to evaluate critical load exceedences (NADP, 2021). This dataset consists of three components. The first sheet shows the critical loads and exceedances summarized to each national park containing at least one species with a calculated CL, the second sheet shows the data summarized to individual species for the number of parks they occur in, and the third sheet shows the data summarized to unique species occurrences within parks. Please read the accompanying Natural Resource Report to learn more about how this dataset was developed and how it can be applied.
