National Park Service and Regions 8, 9, 10, & 12 Park Cultural Landscapes Program. 2019. Old Point Loma Lighthouse: Cultural Landscapes Inventory, Cabrillo National Monument. Cultural Landscapes Inventory Report. 725231. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. NPS Pacific West Regional Office, San Francisco, California / CRIS-CL Database
Inventory Unit Description: Cabrillo National Monument, which includes the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, and the nomination was amended in 1998. The nomination identified the two periods of significance, 1854-1890 and 1913-1950, with areas of significance under Criterion A, maritime history, and Criterion C, architecture. In the evaluation of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse cultural landscape, the team considered two periods of significance: 1854-1890, the active lighthouse period, and 1913-1950, as defined in the National Register documentation for Cabrillo National Monument. 1934-1935 are significant construction dates for the lighthouse area due to NPS Rustic design and WPA design during this time period. Areas of significance considered were maritime history and architecture, as defined in the National Register documentation, as well as park rustic development. Using previous studies, in addition to on-site field investigation and preliminary historical research, it appears that the Old Point Loma Lighthouse cultural landscape, while historically significant, does not retain historical integrity due to a number of construction projects that have occurred since the end of the period of significance. Due to the diminished integrity of the landscape characteristics of the site since the end of the period of significance, it appears that the Old Point Loma Lighthouse cultural landscape is not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, while the resources that do retain integrity have already been listed on the National Register. Since the CLI is a management tool to track the condition of eligible cultural landscapes, a CLI will not be completed for the lighthouse site.
