The Garfield Peak Trail is a component landscape within the Rim Village parent landscape of Crater Lake National Park. Crater Lake National Park was established on May 22, 1902. The park was founded for its scenic beauty and ecological resources, which includes not only the awe-inspiring six-mile long Crater Lake, but two hundred and fifty square miles of diverse and beautiful valleys, pumice deserts, sphagnum bogs and high elevation ridges. The Garfield Peak Trail is locally significant under Criterion A for its association with the history and development of Crater Lake National Park and early NPS master planning. Garfield Peak Trail is also locally significant under Criterion C for its incorporation of the park service Rustic-style architecture and naturalistic landscape design. The period of significance begins in 1917 when the trail was initially constructed as a 1.25 mile-long circuitous ascent along the caldera from Rim Village to Garfield Peak, and ends in1941 when associated planning and development activities at Rim Village came to an end. Notably, in1931 the route was realigned to meet new NPS standards implemented to achieve moderate trail grades at less than fifteen percent. Today, the trail follows its historic alignment and continues to convey its original design intent—to conceal and reveal design of views of Crater Lake, while blending with the surrounding environment.
