Inventory Unit Description: The Fort Spokane Military Reserve Historic District is located approximately 25 miles north of Davenport, Washington within Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area and is situated on the south bank of the Spokane River, about one mile east of the confluence of the Spokane River with the Columbia River. The 640-acre military reserve was established in 1882 and was occupied by troops of the Department of the Columbia from 1880 to 1898. Subsequently, the fort complex served as an Indian Agency school and hospital from 1899 to 1929. Fort Spokane was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 for its state significance under Criteria A and C as the site of the last of the frontier posts established in the Northwest, representative in design and construction of standard government specifications for army posts issued in 1872. The site is also significant at a state level under Criterion D for the potential to yield additional information regarding the military period (1880-1899) of occupation as well as the Indian Agency period (1899-1929). The period of significance for the Fort Spokane Military Reserve Historic District begins in 1880 when the fort site was selected by a survey team directed by General O.O. Howard and extends to 1929 when the American Indian hospital for patients suffering from respiratory ailments closed. The overall historic scene retains the open vistas to the river and timbered hillsides beyond. The site’s historic character continues to be conveyed through the following landscape characteristics: natural systems and features, spatial organization, buildings and structures, archeological sites, and vegetation.
