This reference is standard operating procedure (SOP) 10 from the FQ-2022.1 protocol package, in effect as of the 2021 monitoring season. The SEAN places utmost importance on the occupational health and safety of its employees and partners. Network staff and water quality Park Leads are required to be familiar with and follow the safety policies of each NPS unit in which they work. Water quality fieldwork typically consists of short-duration site visits once per month during the ice-free season to confirm sensors are performing correctly and upload data. These steps occur without Park Leads entering the water, and all locations are within park communities. Every few years, site infrastructure maintenance may demand in-water access. SOP 10 outlines considerations for safety training, communications, protective equipment, terrain and wildlife hazards, vehicle use, chemicals, and incident response. An example Job Hazard Analysis is also included.
