Inventory Unit Description: The Lutz-Martin Farmstead (116-026, 027, 028) is a historic agricultural landscape located in Bath Township, Summit County, Ohio, within the boundaries of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The property occupies the raised upland plateau straddling the Cuyahoga River valley, which is located approximately one mile east of the farm. The farmstead landscape is situated on the east side of Martin Road and comprises 17 acres, containing numerous contributing features: farmhouse, shed, privy, two water pumps, barn and milk house foundations, water well, agricultural field, meadows, fencerow, fence ruin, and entrance drive. Noncontributing landscape features include a domestic yard, vegetable garden, pond, driveway, and natural gas wells; these features date from outside of the period of significance. The property is significant at the local level, and its period of significance spans from 1888 to 1939. The Lutz Martin Farm’s era of significance roughly corresponds to the period of “Railroads, Industrialization, and Scientific Farming: 1851-1913,” as defined in the Agricultural MPD, but it extends to 1939. This period begins with the construction of the farmhouse by Jacob Lutz. While the farm remained in the Martin Family until the year 2000, there appear to be no additions to the farmstead that postdate 1939. The landscape’s 17 acres encompasses the building cluster and associated agricultural fields that remain mown and available for agricultural use.
