Inventory Unit Description: The Hrabak/Stebbens Farm is a historic agricultural landscape located on a plateau above the Cuyahoga River valley, in the Township of Brecksville, Cuyahoga County. The property occupies 45 acres, lying roughly 12 miles south of downtown Cleveland. It consists of a residence, surrounding domestic yard and trees, collection of agricultural outbuildings, meadow, dense and sloped woodlands, circulation routes, and small-scale features. The property is accessed by a graded entrance drive that approaches the farmhouse from Riverview Road to the west. The eastern boundary of the property is adjacent to the historic route of the Valley Railroad, which generally follows the course of the meandering Cuyahoga River and Ohio & Erie Canal in the valley bed. While the borders of the property considered in this CLI do not contain the entire acreage that was owned and farmed by the Stebbens family during the second half of the nineteenth century, they do include a portion of agricultural fields that are yet used for crop cultivation, located along the southern boundary line. The farm’s period of significance, from 1861 to 1930, represents the farm’s agricultural productive years, as well as its transition to more diversified agricultural and recreational uses during the first three decades of the twentieth century. The property is locally significant to the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A, for its association with these successive stages of agricultural development in the Cuyahoga Valley.
