Inventory Unit Description: The Beverly Shores/Century of Progress Architectural District is located in Beverly Shores, Porter County, Indiana and consists of roughly 2 acres. The historic district was accepted on the National Register on June 30, 1986. The district encompasses six buildings and derives its significance from an association with the 1933 Chicago Century of Progress Exposition. The buildings comprised a portion of an architectural exhibit known as the Home and Industrial Arts Group that showcased 13 residences. The group of buildings was innovative and displayed engineering and construction technologies on a national scale for fifty years. The styles and concepts of the buildings became an integral part of the modern residential architecture movement. The Beverly Shores/Century of Progress Architectural District, located within Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, consists of six lots within the Robert Bartlett’s Beverly Shores Unit I Subdivision in Beverly Shores, Indiana. Fronting Lake Michigan, the district is situated midway between Chicago, Illinois, and South Bend, Indiana, and is bound by Carol Lane to the south, Lake Michigan to the north, Dunbar Avenue to the west, and by the Robert Bartlett Subdivision to the east. Lake Front Drive bisects the district east and west and is flanked to the north and south by primary architectural resources. Contributing characteristics and features that provide historic and interpretive context for the primary architectural resources include the Wieboldt-Rostone House, the Cypress Log Cabin and Guest House, the Florida Tropical House, the House of Tomorrow and the Armco-Ferro-Mayflower House. As individual sites within the district there are unique individual characteristics and features for each that contribute to the overall integrity relative to setting, feeling, and association.
