Inventory Unit Description: The Mount Zion Church Site is part of Ozark National Scenic Riverways, located in Shannon County, Missouri. It is accessed by a gravel entrance-drive off County Road K, approximately 500 yards northwest of Akers Ferry. The one-acre site is forested, with a small clearing that surrounds the church. Several yards north of the church, within the tree-line and situated on a downhill slope, is an associated privy. The Mount Zion Church was determined eligible for the National Register in 1993 as a contributing feature of the Akers Ferry Hamlet Cultural Landscape. Its construction was a community-led effort that spanned nine year period from 1939 to 1948. People in the surrounding area contributed building materials, which resulted in a highly geologically diverse selection of stones. The Ozark giraffe style stonework further distinguishes the regional cultural significance of the architecture.
