Inventory Unit Description: The Buttin Rock School Site is located in Shannon County, Missouri, within the boundaries of Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The two-acre property is on the east side of the Current River, near the edge of open bottom land and slightly northeast of Buttin Rock Mountain. The remotely located school is most directly accessed by taking State Route 106 to County Road 106-535 to County Road 539 to NPS 732, which leads to the Macy/Reed Cabin. Buttin Rock School is approximately half a mile further south and is accessible via a primitive service road that passes through fallow agricultural fields. The school site is just within the wood-line between the edge of the fields and the steep valley rise. The Buttin Rock School landscape consists of the school itself, the girls’ privy, and the concrete foundation of the boys’ privy. While the area is heavily foliated by deciduous hardwoods and a thick understory, the grounds immediately around the school are kept open through routine mowing. Historic patterns of circulation are evident in the trace of Buttin Rock Road and a second road trace that climbs the hill on the east side of the property. Historic small scale features include a well and the remnants of a fence. Notable natural features include the formations of rocky outcrops on the hillside, which were used as play areas by the schoolchildren. Buttin Rock School was listed on the National Register on May 31, 1991. It has a local level of significance under Criterion A, for its association with the development of rural public education in the Missouri Ozarks. The period of significance is from 1913 to 1960, beginning with the school’s construction and establishment and ending with the school’s closure.
