Inventory Unit Description: Perry's Victory International Peace Memorial is a 14.5 acre site in Ottawa County, Ohio. The site is located on South Bass Island, in the western basin of Lake Erie. The island is approximately 3 miles long by 1 mile wide. The Perry's Victory Memorial is on a narrow isthmus (about 250 yards wide) between the village of Put-in-Bay and the eastern Portion of South Bass Island. Much of the island is now developed as resort and summer housing, but farming and viticulture predominated in the past. The landscape is a commemorative, designed landscape associated with the Beaux Arts style of design. Significant features of the landscape include open lawns, remnant trees and shrubs, sloped terraces, sidewalks, seawalls, and the plaza with Doric column at the center of the site. The period of significance for the inventory unit is 1911 through 1931. This time period incorporates the design competition, development of the Memorial, installation of a modified landscape design and a span of years when interim modifications reflected practical adjustments. This inventory unit includes the entire area encompassed by the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial and is considered its own parent. The park consists of one designed landscape, which was the focus of a 1994 CLR. Contributing features of this designed landscape include open lawn areas, remnant trees and shrubs, sloped terraces, sidewalks, seawalls, and the plazas and column at the center of the site.
