Inventory Unit Description: The Lessner property (tract 25-143) is situated on a bluff with the Namekagon River flowing quietly below. The property contains 800 feet of frontage along the south bank of the river and is located in the upper Saint Croix region of the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway in Burnett County. Access to the site is via a .4 mile rutted road though woods of mixed hardwoods and scattered pine. The property is ‘pie-shaped’ with the northwest boundary following the contour of the river. The complex of structures is nestled in a clearing in the woods and includes a seasonal recreational cabin, a garage/workshop, and additional outbuildings. Landscape features include a birdhouse, sundial base, concrete abutments and a path that offers access to the river via a 20 foot bank that slopes down to a clearing at the river’s edge. The design elements evident in the Lessner cabin and landscape indicate an interesting mixture of local vernacular architectural traditions with rustic style architectural features. The property retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association for the period of significance of 1935, when the cabin was built, to 1975 when Lessner sold the property to the National Park Service.
