Inventory Unit Description: The Gibson property (tract 27 106) is located within the upper portion of Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway on the north side of the St. Croix River, approximately one mile west of the Gorgon Dam and Saint Croix Flowage in Douglas County, Wisconsin. Access to the site is via bridge across the Moose River (now out of service), followed by a half mile walk from the highway along the old road cut to access the property. The cabin is remotely situated in a flat clearing approximately 40 feet from the river’s edge making it easily accessible from the river. The rustic style log cabin is one and a half stories and was used mostly as a seasonal cabin. Around the cabin site, there are a few domestic plantings; extant perennials on site are day lilies and roses. The clearing overall exhibits few signs of manipulation and essentially blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. According to an oral history given by S. Jean Gibson, the cabin was constructed in 1914 for her grandfather, David Wilkins Stocking of Duluth, MN. The cabin was constructed of cedar logs harvested from the site and built by workers from the nearby town of Gordon. The cabin was generally used as a hunting and fishing/summer cottage, although it was briefly occupied all year round for a few years during the Depression. The cabin, privy and landscape exhibit a moderate to high degree of integrity in terms of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.
