Inventory Unit Description: The I.W. Stevens Lakeside Cottage is located on the protruding peninsula of Williams Island in Namakan Lake within Voyageurs National Park in St. Louis County Minnesota. The property includes four buildings (Mr. Stevens’ house, a log cabin, the sauna, and a generator shed), a root cellar, and its associated site. A number of ruins or deteriorated buildings were removed from the property in 2003, including the boathouse, “new” cabin, honeymoon cabin, woodshed and three privies. The cultural landscape at the I.W. Stevens Lakeside Cottage includes character defining features that help to convey the historic atmosphere of the site. The careful placement of the buildings, garden, and other landscape features to emphasize views of the lake as well as the privacy afforded by the remote location contribute to the historic character of the property. Landscape character defining features include the foundations of nine structures, the dock site, topography, views, and the garden.
