Jun Fujita Cabin: Cultural Landscapes Inventory, Voyageurs National Park
Regions 3, 4, & 5 Park Cultural Landscapes Program. 2015. Jun Fujita Cabin: Cultural Landscapes Inventory, Voyageurs National Park. Cultural Landscapes Inventory Report. 500098. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. NPS Midwest Regional Office, Omaha, Nebraska / CRIS-CL Database
Inventory Unit Description: The Fujita Cabin and Island are located near the Canadian border on Rainy Lake in Voyageurs National Park, northeastern Minnesota. The cabin and surrounding island landscape are rustic and naturalistic in design, taking advantage of the rugged shoreline views, larger viewshed, topography, and vegetation to create a rustic camp setting. The cultural landscape boundaries follow that of the island shoreline, seemingly with the main focus for Fujita on the eastern portion of the island. This area contains the cabin, primary views, shoreline, and a large rock outcropping that may have held symbolic meaning for Fujita. The western portion of the island is currently overgrown with native vegetation, making it hard to determine how Fujita may have engaged with this side of the landscape. Fujita’s small cabin and surrounding setting appear to be a hybrid of both American rustic and Japanese traditional design influences. American design influences found in the cabin and landscape are common to the recreational culture of the early- to mid-twentieth century, while Japanese influences pull primarily from the Muromachi (1336 – 1573), Momoyama (1568 – 1603), and Edo (1603 – 1868) periods, all of which permeate Japanese design standards to this day.
