The National Park Service (NPS) Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) Program selected Capitol Reef National Park (CARE, park) for a Park Conditions Summary (PCS) project in the fall of 2020. Using a consistent and efficient study approach, PCS projects provide a Status of Knowledge review and reporting with respect to current conditions, critical data gaps, and some key factors influencing conditions for a subset of important park natural resources. The PCS development process occurs in five phases (Figure 1). The NRCA Program, park staff, and partner investigator, Utah State University (USU), initiated CARE’s PCS project on 30 November 2020. The study plan scoping meeting was held on 19 January 2021 and 22 January 2021. Details from the scoping phase discussions were incorporated into this first draft of the park’s PCS study plan, with the park and peer review phase occurring between February 8 –26, 2021.
