Located at Fort Wadsworth, on the eastern tip of Staten Island, Battery Dix was built between 1901 and 1904 to help protect the Narrows, the southern gateway to New York Harbor. The battery is now part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. With its massive, poured-in-place concrete emplacements, which once accommodated a pair of 12-inch guns on disappearing carriages, Battery Dix is a well-preserved example of the Endicott-era expansion of American coastal defenses. This historic structure report provides a comprehensive chronology of Battery Dix’s historical and architectural evolution, describes its current physical conditions, analyzes its character-defining features and its historical significance, and provides recommendations for future treatment.
