This publication discusses the origins of Native American journalism in the United States which began c. 1828 with the printing of the first native language newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, at New Echota. The text of this handbook is from an paper in The Regional Review (National Park Service, Region One, Richmond, Va.), Vol. IV, No. 3, March 1940, pp. 24-35. New Echota was the Cherokee Nation Seat of Government from 1825-1838. The New Echota Marker National Memorial was authorized by Congress in 1930 to commemorate the site of New Echota and was managed by the US War Department. The National Monument was transferred to the National Park Service in 1933 along with other historic properties managed by the War Department. New Echota Marker National Memorial was transferred to the state of Georgia in 1950. The site is now part of Georgia’s New Echota Historic Site, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Popular Study Series. The series began in 1938 as articles published in the National Park Service's Region One (Eastern) newsletter, The Regional Review. The newsletters contained a collection of historical and scientific research articles written by experts in their fields. The quality of these articles resulted in repeated requests for reprints. The National Park Service reprinted selected articles in 1941 as the Popular Study Series.
