Bulletin 4: Discusses the reasons for and methods of pruning shade trees, conifers and shrubbery. Also discusses pruning transplanted, damaged, and diseased trees; and dehorning, removal of old studs, suckers and watersprouts, and paints and wound dressings. Bulletin 4 was given minor revisions and reprinted in 1961 Tree Preservation Bulletins: In the 1930s The National Park Service was confronted with the problem of improving and maintaining in good condition thousands of valuable shade, ornamental, or historically significant trees within a variety of areas. In order to guide those who were responsible for this work in park areas, the Civilian Conservation Corps, under the direction of the National Park Service, published the Tree Preservation Bulletins. Although the bulletins were originally intended for park employees, they received wide use by arborists and others. Most of the bulletins were revised and updated in the late 1950s.
