Climate change has manifested itself on Fire Island in a number of ways. Sea level rise (SLR), rising groundwater, increased storm intensity and frequency are impacting Fire Island National Seashore’s natural/cultural resources, infrastructure, as well as the threatening private property. There has been a recognition that management practices need to adapt and evolve for Fire Island’s future. Both the National Park Service and Fire Island National Seashore (the Seashore) along with local communities are interested in pursuing nature-based solutions at bayside erosional hot spots to build resiliency and restore ecosystem services that have been damaged and/or lost. As a first step in implementing nature-based solutions on Fire Island, the Seashore hosted a two-day workshop that brought together subject matter experts, the National Park Service, and Fire Island stakeholders to better understand the current conditions and nature-based solution options that are available. The virtual workshop took place on May 13–14, 2021, was organized by the National Park Service and co-hosted by The Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation, and Point O’Woods Association. This summary report provides the context for the workshop and an overview of the workshop purpose and goals, presentations, discussion that occurred during breakout sessions, recommendations and next steps.
