At the time of acquisition by the National Park Service of Miller Field as part of the Gateway National Recreation Area a large group of abandoned military buildings remained on the site. Prominent among these were the two World War I period aircraft hangars originally identified as the seaplane and landplane hangars. (Southwest and Northeast Hangars, respectively). All these buildings were in deteriorated condition at the time of acquisition, but the two hangars were by far the worst. The condition of the Northeast Hangar in particular had reached such a state of deterioration that renovation was no longer practical. This hangar was demolished in the fall of 1976 and its site converted to a paved and fenced playfield. The Southwest Hangar, being in somewhat better condition, has been evaluated as having sufficient potential for renovation to justify an in-depth feasibility study. This hangar occupies a prominent location adjacent to the main entrance of the Miller Field area. In this location it is a highly visible facility of Gateway National Recreation Area, and yet because of its poor condition, it creates a constant eyesore and a public safety hazard. At the same time, the increasing public interest in recreational opportunities occasioned by National Park Service management of Miller Field has focused on the hangar as a potential indoor recreation facility. The apparent need for such facilities and the many inquiries and suggestions by local citizens have indicated that every reasonable effort should be made to carry out a renovation program for the hangar as an alternative to demolition.
