The National Park Service's 75th Anniversary Symposium was a working congress of individuals and experts with strong interests in the issues and challenges faced by the National Park Service and the National Park System. Its purpose was to allow a process for evaluation of National Park programs by people both inside and outside the government and to identify opportunities to improve the Service's ability to move forward in to the 21st century. May 24, 1991 In advance of the Symposium the National Park Service initiated an intensive review of its responsibilities and prospects for the future. Four Working Groups met twice in the Spring of 1991 in extensive working sessions. They were charged with framing the relevant issues and setting forth preliminary policy recommendations. They produced draft reports which served as the bases for debates and discussions at the Symposium. See under Files and Links: - Working Groups Draft Reports. 75th Anniversary Symposium. Spring 1991 At the Symposium, held in Vail, Colorado in October 1991, several hundred delegates reviewed the Working Groups draft reports, discussed the problems and challenges confronting the National Park Service, deliberated issues and options, and proposed strategies and recommendations. November 21, 1991 The Symposium was guided by a Steering Committee charged with preparing a comprehensive report and set of recommendations for improved park system stewardship and National Park Service management. The report was intended for the Director of the National Park Service. It identified a variety issues for the Service and presented the recommendations and mandates for action (six strategic objectives) that emerged from the Symposium.
