Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park (NMP) is located in northeastern Virginia halfway between Washington D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. Covering over 7,000 acres, the park was designated by Congress in 1927 as a national military park for the purpose of preserving and commemorating the Civil War battles of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Court House, Wilderness, and Chancellorsville. The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania NMP Landscape is identified as the parent landscape for Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. Within the parent landscape are eight component landscapes: Chancellorsville Battlefield, Chatham, Ellwood, Fredericksburg Battlefield–Lee Drive, Spotsylvania Court House Battlefield, Stonewall Jackson Death Site, Sunken Road Landscape, and Wilderness Battlefield. The Fredericksburg National Cemetery is a separate landscape.
