ABSTRACT: After the fire in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), a great opportunity presented itself to directly study the effects of fire on both adapted and intolerant species. This particular study focused on understory woody plants, specifically rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) and winged sumac (Rhus copallina). Researchers aimed to see whether scorch height was a good way to judge fire intensity. Samples were taken from two sites within the GSMNP; bark thickness and scorch height were measured and recorded. Where higher scorch heights were found on surrounding vegetation, thinner bark was found on rhododendron.
