This CLI, originally published in 2014, was updated in 2022 in order to better reflect existing conditions. Observational data gathered in the field, as well as excerpted narrative and graphic data from "Moses H. Cone Memorial Park: Cultural Landscape Report Update" (WJE, Inc. and JMA, Inc., 2013) and "Moses H. Cone Memorial Park: Cultural Landscape Inventory" (WJE, Inc. and JMA, Inc., 2014) provided the basis for this update. Moses H. Cone Memorial Park is a 3,516 acre historic designed landscape within the Blue Ridge Parkway boundaries. It is located in Watauga County, North Carolina, just north of Blowing Rock. The site was originally purchased and developed by Moses H. Cone and his wife Bertha Cone between 1893 and 1899. They built the main house, Flat Top Manor and designed a Country Place Era landscape throughout the grounds. This cultural landscape inventory (CLI) discusses the site’s association with the National Register and its historic importance. The CLI recounts the site’s historic physical development from 1892 to 1950, as well as the site’s contextual history from 1859 to 2002. The CLI also documents the site’s existing conditions. The historic and existing conditions are compared to determine the cultural landscape’s historic significance and historic integrity. This CLI discusses the condition of the site’s historic landscape features and outlines potential impacts to the landscape, including natural and human forces. An overall treatment and specific treatment recommendations are not suggested within this CLI.
