Fort Tompkins stands as a contributing structure to the Fort Wadsworth Historic Site. Until the development of the NIKE Missile program in the 1950s, this site stood as one of the first lines of coastal defense. Originally, constructed in the mid-19th century, the fort represents the last in a history of coastal defense on the site that spans almost two centuries. Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City, is a 102.5-square-mile island at the southernmost point of the state of New York. The area that would eventually be the location of Fort Tompkins is on a bluff 130 feet above sea level providing a commanding view of The Narrows. It is this vantage point overlooking the primary water approach to Manhattan that gave this part of Staten Island its strategic importance.
